The Island
The guide was updated:
Saint Kitts and Nevis, the smallest country in the Americas, is a breathtaking two-island nation in the Caribbean. The islands were first discovered in 1493 by Cristopher Columbus, however, the Spaniards did not stay and the islands remained inhabited until the 17th century. After that, the British arrived and settled until the 20th century when Saint Kitts and Nevis gained independence.
The capital, Basseterre, located on the south coast of St Kitts, is the main industrial and commercial centre and home to most of the local population. In spite of the fact that both islands were formed after volcanic eruptions, the dormant volcanoes are now completely covered with forest and are no longer a threat.
About 250,000 visit the country every year making tourism a key sector of the economy which creates jobs for the local population.
